Prime Day board game deals: FAQs
When do Prime Day board game deals start?
Amazon have confirmed that Prime Day 2024 will take place July 16 through July 17. So, like previous years, Prime Day runs across two days. That said, not all the best board game deals are reserved for the Prime Day period, so it's worth swinging back here to scope out all the early savings and discounts.
When do Prime Day board game deals end?
Despite its name, Prime Day lasts for 48 hours as opposed to 24. So, when the event starts, you’ll have until midnight the next day to take advantage of all the best Prime Day board game deals.
Do I need a Prime membership for Prime Day board game deals?
You will need to have a Prime membership to get access to Prime Day board game deals, as the event is exclusive to Prime members. While this is a bit of a pain in the side for those who don’t have a subscription, it is a nice bit of exclusivity for those already signed up.
Of course, you do have alternatives if you still want to save money on your favorite board games. To jump on the Prime Day hype, some retailers run sales around the same time. If you’re lucky (and keep a close eye out) you might even come across even better deals than those on Amazon. Obviously, getting a free trial of Prime is a useful workaround too.
Get a free 30-day trial of Prime
You can experience all of the Prime Day goodness without paying a dime thanks to Amazon’s 30-day free trial of Prime. Alongside having access to the best Prime Day board game deals, you’ll also be able to stream Prime Video during your trial.
Even if Prime winds up not being your thing, there’s no problem with backing out. Provided you cancel your subscription before your trial ends, you’ll incur absolutely no cost at all.
Should I wait for Black Friday board game deals instead?
While certain games do hit their lowest ever prices during the November sales, that doesn’t mean it’s not worth checking out Prime Day sales too. While the price drops are less extreme and fewer between than during Black Friday, you should still see a couple of stand-out deals. If you do come across a discounted item during Prime Day and aren’t sure if you should hold out until Black Friday for a better price, we recommend referencing its price history using tools like CamelCamelCamel to give you a fuller picture.
Does MTG go on sale during Prime Day?
Many TCGs, including MTG, can see significant discounts during the Prime Day sale event. Last year, for example, we saw price reductions of up to 45% on products from 2023 Magic: The Gathering sets like MTG Lord of the Rings and WIlds of Eldraine.
What to expect from Prime Day board game deals 2024
There are a wide variety of titles that can wind up included in the selection of Prime Day board game deals, no matter what genre or price range they are. So, whether you like chill puzzle games like Azul or like to turn your friends against each other with some good ol’ social deduction à la Werewolf, you should find a bargain or two worth pursuing.
While they may go on sale intermittently through the year anyway, the best party board games are particularly strong candidates for good Prime Day discounts. They tend to be on the more inexpensive side to begin with so they make for great little impulse buys. These are great to add to your collection just in time for Summer too, as simpler games are perfect for a bit of post-BBQ playtime with family or to bring along to a picnic with friends.
On the complete other end of the spectrum, Prime Day is also a good time to pick up more premium hobby board games like Gloomhaven. While you might struggle to justify adding a board game with a $50+ price tag to your basket normally, once you can score a solid bargain on it, it’s an ideal opportunity to cross it off your board game collection wishlist.
Additionally, there’s a good chance that you’ll score some of the best D&D books on a discount too. However, it is worth noting that some of the D&D core rulebooks will technically be out-of-date by this point. Of course, that won’t impede upon your plans to run a campaign according to 5E 2014 rules (or to just treat the old rulebooks to a place in your bookshelf) but if you really want to be up to date, make sure you’re picking up the revised 2024 editions.
Frosthaven | Currently $197.17
MSRP: $299.99
Expected price: $179.99
While it may have released too recently to be part of last year's Prime Day Board Game deals, this wintery stand-alone expansion of Gloomhaven is starting to see discounts that will hopefully reach an all-time low for Prime Day 2024.
Disney Lorcana Ursula's Return Booster Pack Display | Currently $129.76
MSRP: $143.99
Expected price: $123.99
With the newest Disney Lorcana set on the way, we can expect to see a sharp drop in prices of Ursula's Return (which to the delight of Lorcana fans who want to crack some packs on a discount).
Last year's best Prime Day board game deals
To give you an even clearer picture of what to expect out of this year’s Prime Day board game deals, it’s helpful to do a rundown of all the best picks offered on Prime Day from the previous year. While there’s no guarantee that we'll get the same reductions on the same products, it still gives a general idea of what you can expect this time around.
King of Monster Island | $69.99 $38.19 at Amazon
Save $32 - The sequel to King of Tokyo ups the scale with a much bigger game that pits you and friends against the King of Monster Island, so it's only right that it got an equally big discount in the Prime Day board game deals. We hadn’t seen it for less than this.
Spirit Island | $89.99 $43.99 at Amazon
Save $36 - Top-tier co-op game Spirit Island had never been cheaper up until this point, so this discount shot it straight to the top of our 'must see' Prime Day board game deals.
Sherriff of Nottingham | $39.99 $19.19 at Amazon
Save $20 - While this fun bluffing game received an initial price cut for July's Prime Day, Sheriff of Nottingham hit its best ever price as part of Amazon's Big Deal Days last October.
Azul | $39.99 $19.19 at Amazon
Save $20 - This discount was almost as nice to look at as Azul’s pretty tiles. Sure, the game had seen lower sale prices previously but not within the entirety of 2023.
Splendor | $44.99 $19.97 at Amazon
Save $23 - This was the biggest reduction in price we had seen for this engine-builder since 2019. So, while not quite a record saving, it was definitely a worthwhile addition to last year’s best Prime Day board game deals.
Jaipur | $24.99 $18.99 at Amazon
Save $32 - While not Jaipur's lowest price, this was still one of the best discounts we had seen for it in around a year. Although, as one of our favorite card games, it really doesn’t take much to want to pick this gem up.
Warhammer 40K Starter Set | $110 $93.50 at Amazon
Save $23 - This wasn’t quite the set's lowest ever price, but it was still an impressive discount. So, this deal made for a great bargain for those hoping to kick things off in the world of 40K.
Last year’s Prime Day board game deals - UK
HeroQuest | £99.99 £68.75 at Amazon
Save £31 - This classic dungeon-crawling adventure game saw a hefty discount last year, making it one of the definite highlights of 2023’s Prime Day board game deals.
The Yawning Portal | £44.99 £24.99 at Amazon
Save £20 - Tabletop RPGs aren’t the only way to get into the wonderful world of D&D, as shown by this board game from the makers Betrayal at House on the Hill. While serving food at a tavern may be a far cry from adventuring, it’s still a whole lot of fun. Getting £20 off was just the cherry on top.
Snakesss | £24.25 £9.95 at Amazon
Save £15 - This lighthearted bluffing gem from party game pros Big Potato saw a tempting 60% discount as part of last year’s Prime Day board game deals.
Pokemon Paldea Evolved Elite Trainer Box | £44.99 £35.70 at Amazon
Save £9 - In typical Nintendo fashion, the Pokemon TCG can be frustratingly resistant to going on offer, so £9 off marked the lowest price for this Trainer Box is enough of a draw to worth noticing.
Naturally, Prime Day board game deals aren't the only things worth looking into. The sales event also has a lot of other tech at massively reduced prices, including Prime Day laptop deals and Prime Day TV deals. If you want to keep your focus on tabletop though, don't miss the top board games for adults.
